One punch AFL 'thugs' are poor mentors for our young men

 Ross B. Taylor AM

A few months ago our close family friend-a young man-was 'king-hit' by a thug whilst walking along the street in the Perth suburb of Subiaco.

This 'one-punch' attack left Sasha fighting for his life as he lay unconscious on the footpath as his attacker and friends just walked away.

Our newspapers around Australia are full of the horror stories like the one about Sasha, and thugs who run up and hit another person, often from behind. Judges are appalled and governments are increasing the laws to stop this senseless bashing of mostly young people by creeps who are simply cowardly thugs.

AND THEN LAST WEEKEND WE WATCH ON TV, REECE CONCA FROM THE RICHMOND AFL CLUB RUN TEN METERS FROM BEHIND DEVON SMITH (GWS), AND PUNCH HIM ON THE SIDE OF HIS HEAD, KNOCKING HIM OVER.

The AFL tribunal suspended Conca from playing for...wait for it...two weeks. Even worse, on one of the footy shows, a commentator said, "I know it looks bad but really it was not worthy of two weeks...it's a bit hard I felt".

As a society we should all be asking ourselves what do impressionable young men think when they see and hear this? Perhaps the thug who punched Sasha now feels 'validated' by his actions that night? Are we losing our minds to sit back and say nothing about what happens on the football field during our national game? Are these TV clowns who make comments like this really serious?

This punch by Reece should have resulted in at least a suspension for the rest of the year, or eight-ten weeks.

The AFL and the TV commentators should be bloody ashamed of themselves. What is going wrong with our country and national sport? If this happened in National Basketball in the USA or in a game of soccer in Europe, the offender would be suspended for two months if he was lucky.

This incident simply encourages young Australian men to act out their heros actions....

"Sure it's OK to bash someone from behind, and by-the-way, if the missus gives you a hard time for coming home from the footy drunk, then maybe she deserves a bit of a wack around the head as well, so she knows who's boss?

Reece Conca should also be ashamed. So should we all for sitting back allowing this type of thing be condoned by the AFL
